Dillo Toons, commonly nicknamed Armadillotoons, is a classic, Austin-based underground comic from Texas native Jim Franklin, who helped launch the Vulcan Gas Company, the most successful psychedelic music nightclub in Austin. Franklin was the club's chief concert poster artist and soon specialized in drawings of another Texas native, the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Armadillotoons features plenty of Franklin's terrific, and often funny, pen-and-ink illustrations.
Armadillotoons also presents several other Vulcan Gas Company artists and poster creators, including Gilbert Shelton, who was producing amazing psychedelic rock concert posters in Austin before Franklin even revved up. The comic book was sold inside the Vulcan Gas Company nightclub and certainly made its way around the country, including the palatial offices of Rip Off Press, which would print the second issue of Armadillo Comics.
