The Pink Floyd is a actually a concert program in comic book form that was sold during the Pink Floyd concert tour in 1976. As a concert program, it’s a unique and delightful concept. As a comic book, it’s pretty mediocre. But there are certainly highlights to be found, especially for fans of Pink Floyd.

Each of the four band members is given their own two-page story, which are divided by filler material to make up a 12-page-plus-cover book. Roger Waters gets to open the book with “Rog of the Rovers,” an entirely mundane story of his heroics on the soccer field despite being poisoned by the opposing team’s manager. That’s followed by the “insights” provided us in “Life Lines” in which the band members answer a series of simplistic questions. Nick Mason is subsequently featured in “Captain Mason, R.N.” in which he “takes on a German U-Boat in a battle of war-time wits on the high seas.” Yawn. The book gets a boost when Gerald Scarfe contributes a rather cool, sketchy portrait of the band in a center spread, followed by the most interesting story featuring Richard Wright, “Rich Right — He’s Rich and He’s Right!” At least here we are treated to what the band’s real backstage life might be like.

If only we could get more insights like that in this program. Unfortunately, the Rich Right tale is followed by a quiz page featuring Pink Floyd trivia, both obscure and semi-obscure. The final story features David Gilmour in “The Exploits of Dave Derring,” which is little more than an inane glamour piece about Dave’s motorbike racing and how the woman who loves him ends up realizing the errors of her ways.

Really, except for a couple of highlights, this is a lame comic, though it remains a fascinating experiment and a gutsy choice from the band.
