When Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat movie became a huge hit after it came out in April, 1972, Ballantine Books quickly capitalized on the opportunity to reprint all three stories from the original 1969
Fritz the Cat book. For the reprinting, Ballantine divided the stories into three individual books and used a radically different format: an extreme horizontal book layout that divided the original artwork into three panels per page. The books sold for $1.00 each.
